Mount Toubkal: the roof of North Africa
Rising to 4,167 metres, Mount Toubkal is the highest mountain in Morocco and North Africa. The journey usually begins in Imlil before following an ancient trail through Aremd, our home village, and the pilgrimage site of Sidi Chamarouch.
After reaching the Toubkal Refuge, hikers leave before sunrise for the final ascent. The trail climbs across steep, rocky terrain before reaching a summit with extraordinary views over the High Atlas Mountains.
The Toubkal Circuit: beyond the summit
The Toubkal Circuit reveals a quieter side of the High Atlas. Instead of following the direct trail to the summit, the route crosses isolated valleys, mountain passes and traditional villages.
The journey can include the Azzaden Valley, Tamsoult waterfalls and the Aguelzim Pass. It offers more opportunities to meet local families and experience the landscapes surrounding Toubkal National Park.
Aït Bougmez and the M’Goun Massif
Known as the Happy Valley, Aït Bougmez is one of the most beautiful walking regions in Morocco. Cultivated fields, walnut trees and mud-brick villages stretch beneath the peaks of the Central High Atlas.
Trails connect small communities where traditional farming remains part of everyday life. Beyond the valley, the landscape rises towards the wild ridges and remote plateaus of the M’Goun Massif.
The Valley of the Roses
In southern Morocco, the Valley of the Roses combines natural scenery with traditional village life. Paths follow rivers, cultivated gardens and rose fields around Kalaat M’Gouna and Boutaghrar.
The valley is especially known for its fragrant Damascus roses, which local cooperatives transform into rosewater, oils and natural cosmetics. Walking here provides an intimate view of rural Morocco.
Jebel Saghro: Morocco’s volcanic wilderness
Between the High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara lies Jebel Saghro, a region of volcanic peaks, rocky plateaus and hidden valleys.
Trails pass unusual rock formations, nomadic camps and wide spaces where few travellers venture. The scenery is stark, silent and completely different from the greener valleys of the High Atlas.
Jebel Sirwa: quiet trails and saffron villages
Jebel Sirwa rises between the High Atlas and Anti-Atlas ranges. Its volcanic landscapes are surrounded by remote Amazigh villages and valleys known for producing saffron.
Far from Morocco’s busier trails, Sirwa offers a peaceful journey through a region where mountain traditions remain deeply connected to the land.
Trekking in the Sahara
Desert trekking offers another way to experience Morocco on foot. Around Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga, trails cross dunes, dry riverbeds and rocky plateaus with support from camels and a local desert team.
Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga, is easier to reach. Erg Chigaga feels wilder and more isolated. Both offer silent mornings, glowing sunsets and nights beneath a sky filled with stars.
